If you’re interested in wearing a Mexican wedding dress on your wedding day, there’s a variety of beautiful styles that you can choose from. Mexico provides this variety because of its rich diversity of civilizations that influenced its development. The Mayans, Aztecs, and other ancient Mexico’s indigenous women wore brightly colored blouses and skirts made of cactus-based or cotton textiles. These traditional colors and fabrics can still be seen in current Mexican clothing styles, with their use of color, bright embroidery, knotted details, and use of cool, natural fabrics.

Today the leading Mexican wedding dresses include the Huipil wedding dress and the Pajaritos Del Amor wedding dress. In the former, knotting detail and all-cotton fabrics are used reflecting the traditional Mexican styles. It goes for about $170, which can be fair enough and will not break your budget. The Huipil wedding dress is custom made to fit when you order it and it would look great on the sand or at a casual backyard wedding.

The Pajaritos Del Amor wedding dress has bright colors just like the traditional Mexican wedding dresses, and it would look great at an outdoor wedding. It is hand embroidered and has multi-colored flowers that gives it a bohemian look. It comes in sizes medium through extra large and has a lovely lace addition to the skirt with ruffles at the hemline.

The styles of traditional Mexican wedding dresses have been influenced by the Spanish over the centuries. Dresses derived from Spanish influence often contain matador, salsa, and flamenco, style-features. Wedding dresses with bolero jackets and layered ruffles reflect Spanish traditional clothing styles. They are perfect for a luxurious or an elaborate wedding.

Mexican Wedding Dress

A lot of people go about the whole process of wedding planning with the wrong notion that only Mexicans should get Mexican weddingdresses. This makes them miss out of the unique touch such a beautiful garment brings to a simple ceremony. The richness of the Mexican as a result of their history is also being reflected in the richness of Mexican wedding dresses. Although, they have a few features which are similar to western dresses, but the differences are attractive.
Mexican wedding dresses are a reflection of the Spanish influence on the Mexican fashion world; however, there is still a room for creativity and innovation. For instance, the traditional white, full-length gown may not fully fit into the contemporary wedding styles, but the huipil could be an excellent choice for a Mexican dress. It comes with bold, elaborate designs and patterns that can add color and drama to any wedding theme of choice, and the decorative stitching adds a touch of sophistication. And if the wedding has a beach theme, the wedding planner should consider this type of dress because of its seamless design which complements the sun, sand and surf.
If you need Mexican dress styles for your wedding, you should consider a Flamenco look or the Enredo. The Flamenco look is a combination of a fitting dress and bolero jacket. It gives you a great look effortlessly. The groom’s arm should have a matador jacket to make the look even better. A skintight pair of trousers will just make the look perfect.
Mexican dress for the bridesmaids and flower girls outfits may have ruffles to add dynamism to the whole setup. Apart from the fan that is commonly available, there are many other accessories available. A quechquemitl is suitable for the wintry months; it is thick cape draped off the shoulders and runs smoothly to the floor.

As for the enredo, it is a full wrap-around skirt that guarantees protection from cold and at the same time, providing style. If you are the adventurous type, you have the option to mix and match this Mexican dress for a Mexican wedding.

The Most Overplayed Songs at Mexican Weddings

Earlier this month, Rocks Off contributor and all-around nice guy Jeff Balke enlightened us with this little list of songs that are standard operating procedure at weddings. But as much as I love "Twist & Shout" and "YMCA," in my very Mexican experience, those songs were not what I was used to hearing when one of my hundred or so cousins got married.

DJs at Mexican weddings certainly have their own arsenal of go-to canciones to pack the dance floor, from huapangos to cumbias, rancheras y más. As my primo Gustavo Arellano so eloquently writes, "...while Southern California is chockablock with banda sinaloense, Chalino Sanchez wannabes, rancheras, sierreño, sonidero, and conjunto norteño (and the mashing of them all), the Texas airwaves play a different style... grupero, tribal, and northern Mexico-style cumbias rule."

So in that respect, the songs on this list may not sync up exactly with Mexican wedding songs in Califas, or in Chicago or New York City for that matter, but if you are ever invited to a wedding here in Houston or anywhere in South Texas, I bet this list accurately reflects the experience.

So put on your pointy boots and listen up to the following:

The Most Overplayed Songs at Mexican Weddings

* La Vivora De La Mar

This is something like the Mexican "Chicken Dance." Basically, the bride and groom stand on chairs while the male and female guests take turns conga dancing under the extended arms of the newlyweds and the bride's wedding veil. Then you take off the groom's shoes and throw him in the air. Fun stuff .

* Huapango Redoblando

A huapango is a fast-paced, accordion-driven song that can be line-danced by a couple or in a group. Starting with your left foot, you tap it twice in front of you, then alternate the movement with your right foot, shuffling forward with every cycle. About a million times. What better way than to sweat off the fajitas you ate at dinner?

* Any cumbia by Fito Olivares

Fito Olivares y La Pura Sabrosura are the masters of the cumbia, and their saxophone-laden sound is always fun to dance to at Mexican weddings. Fito and his brother Javier, may he rest in peace, are from Ciudad Camargo, Tamaulipas, but the group calls Houston home. "Juana La Cubana," "La Gallinita," "El Cholesterol"... we could have chosen literally thousands of Fito songs, but "Aguita De Melon" is one of my favorites.

Mexican Wedding Cookie Recipe

Mexican wedding cookies are a top pick around the holidays, along with Biscotti and Jam Dots.
The gluten free version is a bit more delicate and crumbly, so I've added an egg to stabilize them without losing that melt in your mouth feel. You might want to double the recipe: these babies go fast and also make a great gift.

Mexican Wedding Cookie Recipe

Ingredients

    * 1 cup (2 sticks) organic pastured unsalted butter, at room temperature .
   *  1/2 cup organic, powdered confectioners’ sugar, plus additional for dusting cookies .
   *   1 egg .
   *  1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract .
   *    ½ teaspoon ground mace (optional) .
   *  Pinch of sea salt .
   *    2 cups all-purpose gluten free flour blend* (See note below) .
   *    1/3 cup almond flour or very finely ground almonds (almond meal) .
   *  1 cup pecans or walnuts, chopped fine .
Mexican Wedding Cookie Recipe

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 350’F
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Place the butter in a mixing bowl and stir in the confectioner’s sugar, egg and vanilla extract with a wooden spoon or electric mixer on low speed until well blended.
Stir together the mace, sea salt, all-purpose flour and almond flour. Gradually add the flour mixture (on low speed if using the mixer) to the butter, along with the chopped pecans. Do not over-mix. The dough should just be uniform in texture.
Pinch or scoop enough dough (about a tablespoon) and roll into a 1-inch ball. Alternatively, shape the dough into a small crescent. If making round cookies, place the balls on the cookie sheet one inch apart and press down slightly so they don’t roll around. If making crescents, place them an inch apart.
Bake the cookies for 12-15 minutes, until light golden-brown.
 Remove the tray from the oven and dust the cookies with powdered sugar while still warm.
Let the cookies cool for 10 minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack or board (they are extremely fragile when hot). Let cool completely before serving. The cookies can be dusted with additional powdered sugar when plated.
Makes about 2 ½ dozen cookies.
*If your flour blend doesn’t contain xanthan or guar gum, add 1 teaspoon.
